Turkije veegt vloer aan met Saoedi-Arabië

Oeps, dit gaat Saoedi-Arabië niet op prijs stellen:
Turkeys top religious official has blasted the Saudi Arabian government for massive renovation work surrounding the Grand Mosque, Islams holiest place of worship, which also houses the cube-shaped Kaaba. It is almost like the Kaaba is imprisoned by the shopping malls and the hotels [built around it], the president of the Directorate General for Religious Affairs (Diyanet), Mehmet Görmez, said during an interview broadcast on public station TRT Türk.
Dit ligt nogal gevoelig, niet alleen omdat het om de Kaaba gaat, maar ook omdat het Ottomaanse Rijk eeuwenlang de beschermheer was van de kaaba en andere islamitische heiligdommen, die in het moderne Saoedi-Arabië liggen.
Het wordt interessant om te zien hoe de Saoedis hierop reageren. Zij willen dé beschermheren van (de soennitische) Islam zijn, maar historisch gezien waren de Turken dat véél langer.
