Het WNF - afdeling het Verenigd Koninkrijk - heeft een nieuwe voorzitter. Zoals gebruikelijk is bij deze organisatie betreft het geen (gewone) burger, maar een lid van het koninklijk huis. En wat voor lid: de kroonprins zelve.
Prins Charles neemt vanaf
deze week de leiding van het WWF-UK (World Wildlife Fund is de Engelstalige naam voor deze groepering) op zich. En daar mogen wij -
mere mortals - buitengewoon dankbaar om zijn.
U zult zich afvragen: 'Hoe dat zo?' Nou, prins Charles is namelijk onze ridder in een groen harnas. Ja, hij gaat ons
beschermen tegen al die vreselijke dingen die we onszelf aandoen (zoals economische ontwikkeling en kapitalisme):
According to Prince Charles, the human race is, well, doomed. In his first speech as the newly appointed president of the World Wide Fund for Nature UK (WWF-UK), Prince Charles claimed human beings are already an endangered species, and that the world is already in the sixth extinction event.
Its not the first time that Prince Charles has gone a little over the top with his rhetoric. Previously the Prince claimed that those who even questioned his alarmist views were playing a reckless game of roulette with the environment. In another comment he claimed that we had just eighteen months to save the planet. That was in May, 2008.
Achtien maanden? In mei, 2008? Nou ja, hij kan er dan een eeuw of 18 naast zitten, maar dat kan de besten overkomen. Toch?
Je zou denken dat een organisatie die graag serieus genomen wil worden door de buitenwacht iemand tot voorzitter zou benoemen die weet waar hij het over heeft en die niet nodeloos alarm slaat. In het geval van het Wereld Natuur Fonds is helaas niets minder waar: nee, daar geldt de stelregel blijkbaar 'hoe alarmerender hoe beter'.
Rogert Helmper (MEP) legt uit op
zijn website wat dit betekent voor het Verenigd Koninkrijk, het WNF,
en voor ontwikkelingslanden. Een lang verhaal kort gemaakt:

WWF like Greenpeace pursues a policy of conservation at all costs, irrespective of the outcomes. Their policies do of course lead to sustainability: sustainable unemployment and poverty in the developing world. In most cases, developing nations actually conserve more of their countries than their western counterparts. However, despite sitting in their ivory towers, the folks at WWF and Greenpeace often struggle to see that.
We really have to start to recognize the complicity of WWF and now Prince Charles in supporting an anti-development agenda. Is it really acceptable for Britain to be channeling money to a conservation effort that lacks credibility or the support of developing communities? Does this not undermine our commitment to the Millennium Development Goals?
Natuurlijk doet dat het. Dat is dan ook meteen waarom het zo problematisch is dat een lid van het koninklijk huis een organisatie als het WWF leidt - of dat nu in Nederland is of in Engeland. Je geeft er een politiek signaal mee af, zeker omdat het WWF (en Greenpeace trouwens) steeds politieker bezig zijn.
