Speaking to Today's Zaman, an EU envoy said: The rhetoric used by Turkish leaders has no place in European culture. The statements [made by Turkish officials] do nothing but help those countries which have been seeking a pretext to oppose Turkey's [accession bid]. A common view expressed by EU envoys suggests that Turkey should improve its ties with the European bloc further and have healthy communication. The EU also desires to see a more moderate rhetoric by Turkey.
As the spat between the EU and Turkey grows, at receptions attended by EU envoys in Ankara, topic at the top of the agenda is the defiant tone used by Turkish officials. Those envoys supporting Turkey's accession bid say they have difficulty in understanding Turkish leaders. Do they [Turkish officials] really think that the harsh rhetoric towards Europe will benefit them, ask the envoys. Another envoy says: When we translate the statements of Turkish leaders, we are appalled. The rhetoric, full of threats and arrogance, cannot be accepted in Europe.
