Column Frits Bosch: Democraten spreken goed, maar slaan de plank toch mis

Joe Biden heeft op de Democratische Conventie een fantastisch speech gegeven, wellicht de beste uit zijn veertig jarige loopbaan. Barack Obama hield een flammend betoog en ook Michelle Obama kwam geweldig goed uit de hoek en tenslotte heeft ook Kamala Harris geweldig goed gesproken. En toch was hun optreden naar mijn mening onverstandig. Alle vier hadden ze de enkele doelstelling om Donald Trump de grond in te boren. Maar met ‘de Donald’ is het: je vindt hem goed of je vindt hem niet goed. Daar zal een betoog van Democraten niet aan kunnen veranderen. De menig staat al zo vast als een huis.

Opvallend was ook dat Democraten geen ruimte hadden ingeruimd voor beleid. ‘Waarheen met dit land’ werd niet duidelijk. Er werd met geen woord gesproken over de riots, de mobs. Wie zwijgt stemt toe. Iedere ‘law abiding citizen’ verafschuwt de mobs: weg zijn die stemmen voor de Democraten. Niets over China. Niets over Midden Oosten, waar Trump succes boekt. Wel over Corona, maar dat is gemakkelijk scoren over de rug van slachtoffers. Joe Biden trok vooral de emotionele kaart. Het is duidelijk: hij is een nette en ethisch hoogstaande man, hoewel Tara Reade daarover een kwartslag anders denkt. Ethisch hoogstaand is onvoldoende om president van de VS te worden. Geen wonder dat Trump in de peilingen nu nek-aan-nek ligt met Democraten. Ik dacht dat Trump, als botte aap, het bij lange na niet zou redden, maar daar denk ik nu anders over. Als hij geen grote fouten maakt, kan hij de winst royaal pakken. Alle negatieve boeken over Trump en Rusland connecties ten spijt.

Ik ken zijn CV, een ongelooflijk verhaal waar ik graag later aandacht aan schenk. Ik hecht veel waarde aan zijn oordeel. Hij schrijft mij vanuit Californië, VS, als volgt.

“The weaknesses in the American political system is, I think, has been pointed out by many, especially on the Democratic side. The role of money in the elections, the almost grotesque popularity contests, the importance of Wall Street. Many Americans see this. Decades ago Senator McCain on the right and a liberal Democratic Senator worked together for Campaign Finance Reform. It went nowhere. Similar attempts at reform have been proposed again and again. But there is one thing, I feel, that is missed, as indeed some Americans also miss seeing: the cultural factor. Trump voters feel that Trump speaks for them and to them, against the drift of the country, the political correctness stuff, the hypocrisies of the left (“they love the public schools but send their kids to private schools”), the further hypocrisy about illegal immigration as well as the general condescension of the left toward Middle America (“they’re just “racists.”) In other words, the right hates the TONE of the country, which the left is largely responsible for. They know Trump hates that as much as they do, and they’re more than willing to overlook Trump’s many flaws because he “tells it like it is.” The left has never fully grasped that people vote their emotions, not necessarily their self-interest. Or, more strongly put, these emotions are perceived as their self interest.”

Wow! Manfred Wolf slaat de spijker op z’n kop! Als je zo zwaar op Trump bashing inzet, dan bruskeer je per definitie alle kiezers die op Trump hebben gestemd. En die wil je juist zo graag in je eigen hokje zien te krijgen, maar zo lukt dat niet. Als je Trump uitscheldt, dan scheldt je de ‘deplorables’ uit. Democraten hebben in vier jaar Trump blijkbaar niets geleerd. Ze blijven in hun establishment rond dabberen. Hier zie ook wel een lijntje naar ons land.
